Beyond just enhancing technological infrastructure, Google also revealed that its investment encompasses numerous clean energy projects and funds dedicated to improving local biodiversity, education, and workforce development in Finland. Ruth Porat, president and chief investment officer of Alphabet and Google, remarked, “We are proud to deepen our roots in Finland, pairing technical infrastructure growth with new energy capacity initiatives and enhanced affordability.”
Earlier in 2023, Alphabet announced an increased global spending plan reaching up to $205bn to scale up computing resources, particularly for AI and machine learning applications, highlighting the intense demand for securing power and data capabilities.
The deal with Fortum provides financial assurance for the Loviisa plant, which currently accounts for roughly 10% of Finland’s electrical output. Fortum expressed optimism about Google's sizable commitment, which would aid an investment program aimed at prolonging the life of the nuclear plant and maximizing its capacity.
