Yet today, only 420 such vehicles are registered in Texas, and the ambitious goal of a vast robotaxi network remains a lofty vision.
The robotaxi network officially launched in Austin last June, featuring a limited number of Model Y electric vehicles equipped with human safety monitors in the front seats. Over time, Tesla has begun removing human monitors from many of its cars. Currently, the service is operational in selected cities in Texas and Florida, while also holding permits to function in Arizona and Nevada. California regulations still mandate that human drivers be present in each vehicle due to the lack of a driverless permit.
One of the most significant questions surrounding the Cybercab is how it will navigate complex regulations regarding autonomous vehicles. Presently, federal safety regulations require cars to have steering wheels and brake pedals, which the Cybercab lacks. Last month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) granted an exemption to Zoox, an Amazon subsidiary, for its box-like autonomous vehicles that do not feature traditional driver controls. However, Tesla has not yet filed for a similar exemption concerning the Cybercab.
A spokesperson for the NHTSA mentioned that the agency is closely monitoring Tesla's developments and evaluating the situation. However, a Tesla executive recently suggested that an exemption application may not be necessary for their operations.
The potential of the Cybercab extends beyond its direct application as a passenger transport vehicle. Plans are underway for Tesla to market these autonomous vehicles without traditional driving controls directly to consumers by the end of 2026. This ambitious target could require substantial legal adjustments. Additionally, Tesla aims to engage entrepreneurial enthusiasts by allowing them to operate fleets of Cybercabs, reflecting a broader vision for the future of transportation.
While Tesla is bullish on its autonomous vehicle ambitions, the competition in this space is fierce. Recently, Ashok Elluswamy, head of Tesla's AI software department, announced that Tesla vehicles had collectively logged one million miles without human intervention. Notably, Waymo, another autonomous vehicle developer, achieved the same milestone earlier in January 2023 with vehicles operating in 14 metropolitan areas across the US.
At present, Tesla believes its reliance on affordable cameras for navigation gives it a competitive edge over rivals like Waymo and Zoox, which utilize more costly radar and lidar systems. However, questions linger about what it will take for the Cybercab—and Tesla’s robotaxi network—to catch up and overcome regulatory challenges.
During the recent event, executives highlighted the Cybercab's advanced technology, including a 22-inch touchscreen installed in the center console, emphasizing that passengers could divert their attention to entertainment or productivity during rides. Engineering director Silvio Brugada mentioned, “Anything you can possibly do as long as you have your seatbelt on.” Though the crowd responded with modest enthusiasm, the tone was markedly different from Tesla's more electrifying product launches in the past.
The future of the Cybercab embodies both ambition and uncertainty. It represents Tesla's desire to lead the revolution in autonomous vehicle technology while also highlighting the enormous challenges that remain.
