Utility regulators evaluate numerous financial aspects, including the assets owned by utility firms, such as power plants and transmission lines, alongside their operational costs like salaries, fuel, and purchased sources of electricity. A recent report by the organization overseeing the PJM market underscores the influence that increasing data center electricity demands have on consumers. According to their findings, expected demands will contribute to a staggering $23 billion increase in customer electricity prices, which will continue at least until the end of 2028. This reality underscores the strain data centers place on existing energy infrastructure.

The allocation of costs associated with expanding utility infrastructure means that residential consumers will often bear the burden. For instance, if a utility company must upgrade facilities to accommodate the increased demand created by a new data center, those costs will typically be distributed among all users, not solely those who are driving the spike in consumption.
