Gudea leverages AI to track and manage social media narratives, helping organizations avert potential crises before they spiral out of control.
Every day, millions of conversations unfold across social media platforms and websites. In this digital landscape, a seemingly minor post—be it AI-generated misinformation, hate speech, or unfounded rumors—can morph into a substantial public controversy almost overnight. Gudea, a firm that tracks the dissemination of stories and rumors online, refers to itself as the "storm tracker for the internet." This innovative startup is harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to assist organizations in identifying potential crises before they escalate.
Unlike conventional social listening platforms, which primarily monitor metrics like mentions, hashtags, and impressions, Gudea offers a more comprehensive analysis of how conversations evolve over time. The company focuses on revealing who is influencing discussions, how information is transmitted, the speed at which a narrative gains traction, and the potential future implications of that narrative.
Gudea's AI technology examines behavior patterns, interpersonal relationships, and the pathways that stories traverse across over 500 mainstream and fringe platforms, including X, Reddit, and TikTok. It does not merely count posts, but rather provides crucial context, enabling decision-makers to discern how to react to spikes in conversation.
"These large industries often fail to recognize that they can take proactive steps to protect their reputation and brand," stated Keith Presley, Gudea's CEO and co-founder, during a presentation at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026. "Many communications officers still rely on outdated tools, which only measure overall hashtags and impressions. We aim to provide actionable insights to enhance their strategy."
Founded in 2023 by Keith Presley, Jonathan Sperber, and James Thomin, Gudea has a unique backstory. Presley has spent over 15 years working in various fields, including political campaigns and defense. He played a crucial role in establishing the framework for Andrew Yang’s presidential campaign. In contrast, Sperber, the chief strategy officer, has a solid background in disinformation research, while Thomin, the company’s CTO, holds a Ph.D. in chemical engineering and possesses nearly two decades of experience in AI and machine learning.
The journey to forming Gudea began with the George Washington Initiative, a nonprofit that emerged after the 2020 election. This organization adapted strategies utilized within the intelligence community to combat online networks associated with terrorist groups like Al Qaeda and ISIS. Instead of using this approach for international issues, they aimed to confront domestic disinformation campaigns.
As they began to apply these strategies, the team identified a significant gap: existing tools failed to illustrate how information circulated among individuals, groups, and networks. This challenge gave rise to Gudea's innovative approach.
Now, three years post-launch, Gudea boasts nearly 40 clients across various sectors. Their client roster includes a Fortune 50 telecommunications organization, a Fortune 50 retail giant, a renowned AI lab, and public relations and government agencies, among others.
With the proliferation of generative AI technology, the demand for Gudea's services is more pronounced than ever. Presley notes that AI tools have dramatically reduced the resources needed to create content and manage online campaigns. Tasks that previously required significant manpower can now be executed by individuals using efficient software.
"When we initially analyzed our data back in 2021, roughly one out of four topics we looked into exhibited some form of inauthentic activity. Nowadays, we detect this inauthentic engagement in about 90% of what we investigate," Presley explains. This shift underscores the urgency for advanced tools like Gudea in an environment rife with misinformation.
As Gudea continues to evolve, it plans to enhance its capacity to analyze where narratives originate and the pathways they follow. One ambitious forthcoming initiative is the implementation of geolocation for narratives. Set to debut next year, this technology will allow users to pinpoint where conversations are occurring with unprecedented accuracy, even down to specific city blocks.
Additionally, Gudea aims to expand its capabilities, enabling users to access tools behind their analysis. This feature would allow businesses to run advertising campaigns through Gudea’s AI model before officially launching them, thus providing insights into potential pitfalls.
In a recent funding round, Gudea successfully raised $7 million, co-led by Mudita Venture Partners and Silicon Road Ventures, bringing its total funding to approximately $15 million. This financial support will help propel Gudea's technological advancements and expand its customer outreach.
In today’s digital arena, where social media narratives can escalate rapidly, Gudea stands out as a proactive solution. By leveraging cutting-edge AI technology, it empowers organizations to respond effectively, proactively fortifying their reputations in an ever-evolving landscape.
