The Open Compute Project (OCP) Global Summit 2026 showcased significant advancements in open networking infrastructure that aim to enhance artificial intelligence (AI) operations. Leading this initiative is Meta, which introduced its first liquid-cooled network solutions, namely the IcePack rack and the innovative 102.4T IceCube switch platform. This year, as AI workloads expand, the need for scalable and efficient networking solutions has become paramount.

The 102.4T generation: liquid-cooled networking at AI scale

As the demand for AI computations surges, the infrastructure needs to evolve markedly. At OCP 2026, Meta presented its IcePack liquid-cooled rack system designed to handle the immense data needs of AI systems. This pioneering rack adopts OCP's ORV3-HPRv1 standard, integrating IceCube switch blades that feature an impressive 102.4 terabits per second (Tbps) of bandwidth. This setup includes variants powered by both Broadcom's Tomahawk6C and NVIDIA Spectrum-6 switch ASICs, all under the management of Meta's open-source FBOSS operating system.

The introduction of IcePack represents a twofold increase in bandwidth compared to previous models while meeting the thermal requirements essential for advanced AI data centers. The integration of liquid cooling technology not only enhances performance but also aligns with environmental sustainability objectives.

Flattened Planar Fabric: changing the game for AI scalability

Another groundbreaking innovation introduced at this summit is the Flattened Planar Fabric (FPF). This multiplane backend architecture significantly transforms the way graphics processing units (GPUs) interconnect with networks. Each GPU can now establish connections through eight independent links to various switches, thus enhancing redundancy and reliability.

The motivation behind the FPF is clear: as AI clusters now span numerous buildings and regions, achieving resilience in networking is vital. This multilayered approach not only boosts performance under diverse operational conditions but also allows Meta and NVIDIA to streamline fabric standards across their cloud partnerships.

Moreover, with AI workloads constantly evolving and demanding higher network efficiencies, the collaboration with cloud service providers will facilitate the deployment of similar architectures across various infrastructures. Standardizing networking protocols while accommodating the particular needs of individual locations presents a unique challenge that both Meta and its partners are keen to address.

Connecting on-premise data centers with public cloud solutions

As data centers migrate towards leased and cloud-based resources due to the rapid demands of AI, a significant challenge remains: ensuring that networking performs uniformly, regardless of GPU location. This point is underscored at OCP 2026 where Meta discusses how to bridge disparate environments.

One of the fundamental strategies involves deploying a unified operational model across platforms. Standardization not only drives cost-efficiency but also enhances system interoperability. By employing advanced performance validation techniques and ensuring that cloud partners maintain consistent benchmarks for various configurations, Meta is setting a standard that other companies can follow.

Moreover, integrating mechanisms like eBGP link bandwidth signaling allows Meta to adaptively distribute traffic based on current path capacities, optimizing performance while proactively managing congestion. This adaptive routing and intelligent scheduling promise to improve training robustness across geographically distributed clusters.

Partnering for scale-up and new transport protocols

Meta's introduction of the Tahan Ethernet-based scale-up switch marks a pivotal move towards standardizing interconnects between accelerators. This switch is built on the well-regarded Broadcom Tomahawk 5 ASIC and is designed to offer high capacity, making it a robust option for AI training accelerators.

The switch operates under Meta's existing lossless transport protocols, enabling the unification of scale-up and scale-out fabrics. Tahan is positioned to mitigate the complexities traditionally associated with proprietary technologies, thereby expanding the potential use of Ethernet in scale-up architectures.

In line with this vision, Meta's ongoing commitment to the Ethernet for Scale-Up Networking (ESUN) initiative allows for the definition of open specifications that facilitate interoperability among various hardware platforms. The recent release of ESUN 1.0 provides tangible guidelines while maintaining flexibility for implementation by industry partners.

Sustainability and open platforms: the path forward

Meta's strategies at OCP 2026 are not solely about creating proprietary technologies; they aim to foster an ecosystem of collaboration. By co-leading the Open Switch Platform Architecture (OSPA) initiative with partners like Microsoft and Alibaba, Meta is establishing a unified model that provides the groundwork for future open networking solutions.

Additionally, the announcement of MetaRoCE, an open-source remote direct memory access (RDMA) transport protocol, signifies a substantial step toward ensuring reliable, high-throughput communications across AI clusters. Tailored specifically for the demands of large-scale Ethernet fabrics, MetaRoCE is designed to be easily adopted by the broader AI infrastructure community.

With these advancements, Meta reaffirms its commitment to an interconnected open future where collaboration can address the growing demands of AI infrastructure. By inviting stakeholders across the industry to participate in building effective networking standards, Meta envisions a collective approach to the evolving landscape of AI technology.

Join us in shaping the future of AI networking

The innovations unveiled at OCP 2026 by Meta encapsulate both the challenges and opportunities facing the AI realm. This convergence of open networking and AI represents a monumental shift towards a more sustainable, efficient, and agile technological future.

Engineers, vendors, and system integrators are encouraged to engage with Meta's initiatives and contribute to shaping networking infrastructures that meet the demands of the AI era. Through collaboration and dedication to open standards, the OCP community can pave the way for a new chapter in AI deployment.
